The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a register containing names of all genuine Indian citizens. The register was first prepared after the 1951 Census of India. The NRC is now being updated in Assam to include the names of those persons who appear in the NRC, 1951, or in any of the Electoral Rolls up to the midnight of 24 March 1971 or in any one of the other admissible documents issued up to mid-night of 24 March 1971, which would prove their presence in Assam or in any part of India on or before 24 March 1971.
The final draft was released on 30 July, 2018, at all NRC Seva Kendra (NSK) in the state. In the final draft, of the 30.29 million registered names, as many as 4 million applicants found their names excluded.
The office of the State Coordinator for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) published a guide for checking names in the final list to be published on August 31, 2019.
Assam state BJP leadership has urged the state and central governments to introduce legislation to ensure that genuine Indians left out can be included later.
